Encounters with Sharks, Dolphins and Big Fish
Written and illustrated by Len Jones
In this wonderfully evocative book of short stories, Len Jones recalls adventures in angling and spearfishing off the coast of Natal, South Africa spanning some thirty years following the Second World War. This was the time when the land based whaling industry in Durban attracted large numbers of sharks inshore and there was action aplenty.
These stories are packed with drama, humour, adventure and most importantly sharks and big fish, spurring you from page to page. They tell of the author's early years as a novice angler and spearfishermen and recall events and personalities responsible for nurturing the great passion of his life... the sea and it's fish.
From accounts of shark fishing from Durban's South Pier to tales of heavy surf and spearing large pelagic fish. Encounters ... is truly a rollicking captivating read and must surely be hailed as a bench mark by which all other fishing stories can be measured.
About the Author
Len Jones is well known for his fishing and spearfishing Guide Books as well as his marine sculptures. He received his Springbok colours and represented South Africa at the World Spearfishing Championships held in Cuba in 1967. He is still an active spearfisherman.
Hooks, Spears and Spanners
At last, the long awaited and much anticipated sequel to Encounters With Sharks, Dolphin and Big Fish.
Len Jones has once again dished up an enthralling collection of fascinating short stories which are based on his experiences as an angler, spearfisher and commercial diver.
Like his previous work, this is a compelling, exciting an at times almost unbelievable read. The numerous tales that unfold range from amusing trough to the strange and harrowing. As always however, he is able to find humour in almost any situation. Every story is filled with an ensemble of colorful characters that spring to life with each passing phrase. At least one tale sets the record straight regarding the "infamous Mr. Jones", Len giving the account as it happened, not as it was recorded and rumoured at the time.
There is a diversity of content in this book with stories of the big one that got away, as well as the highly amusing, and sometimes distressing, incidents experienced while working South African Diving Services, one of the first commercial diving firms in the country.
This is a book that can be read again and again. A book that home on your shelf next to your favorite works of non fiction, or simply a great read to laze away the hours. It will appeal to readers both young and old, weaving its charm on all who turn its pages.
