    How To Choose A Speargun

The right speargun for you may not be the right one for the person diving next to you. In this guide, we'll explore the various factors to consider when choosing a speargun, taking into account different experience levels and hunting conditions.

    For Beginners:

    1. Pole Spears for Newbies: If you're a beginner looking to explore the world of spearfishing, pole spears can be an excellent choice. They are cost-effective and straightforward, making them ideal for learning the ropes without breaking the bank.

    2. Weight and Momentum: When starting, consider using a pole spear with some weight. The added weight will provide better momentum and power for successful shots.

    3. Two-Piece vs. Three-Piece: Two-piece pole spears offer more stability and less flex when you pull the hand spear, making them a good choice for beginners. Three-piece pole spears may have some flex, but this can be mitigated by slightly twisting the hand spear.

    4. Entry Level Guns: For those who want to transition to more advanced equipment, entry-level spearguns are a viable option. While they are more affordable, however, they lack certain features like a rail to support the shaft for increased accuracy.

    5. Materials: Be aware that cheaper guns are often made from plastic. Loading the gun exerts pressure on weaker materials, which may require an upgrade as you gain more experience and accuracy.

    Intermediate to Experienced Divers:

    1. Consider Your Conditions: If you fall into the intermediate to experienced category, your choice of speargun should depend on the hunting conditions and target species.

    2. General All-Round Performance: A 110cm gun with double 16 rubbers and 7mm shafts is a versatile choice that works well for reef and headland diving. It provides a balance between maneuverability and power.

    3. Size Matters: If you plan to hunt larger fish, consider increasing the gun size to around 120cm. While aluminium guns are lighter, timber guns offer better tracking in the water due to reduced recoil and can be easily maintained with sanding and oiling.

    4. Roller Guns: These are perfect when you need a short yet powerful gun. Roller guns offer extra power due to their design, as the rubbers go all the way around the gun at the roller points, providing better tension and propulsion for the shaft.

    5. Cuttlefish Shaped Guns: These guns have a slimmer profile, which improves tracking in the water, making them a great choice for underwater hunters looking for precision.

    6. Larger Game Fish: For targeting larger game fish in blue water conditions, consider guns around 140cm. These guns often come with wings for improved buoyancy and weight to absorb recoil for enhanced accuracy.

    7. Muzzle Type: Choose between a closed muzzle for better accuracy or an open muzzle for an unobstructed line of sight when aiming. Be prepared with spare shafts if using a closed muzzle, as shaft bending can make them unusable.

    8. Invest in Stainless Steel: If you're looking for longevity in your speargun, entirely stainless steel guns are a worthy investment. They offer resistance to wear and tear, ensuring they last as long as you do.

Selecting the right speargun is a personal choice that depends on your skill level, hunting conditions, and preferences. Take your time to explore various options and consider the factors mentioned in this guide, and if you're still not sure, drop into your local Adreno and the team will be happy to walk you through the decision making process.
